Ambient devices

We currently take it for granted to consume web content in a browser using a PC - or a mobile with a small screen and a browser. But is this really how we want to be informed and communicate - always via a complex device that needs a few minutes to start up?

If only there was a much simpler way to engange with information - without the hassle; no keyboard, no screen, no menus, no credentials to login.

Such solutions exist now - small and simple devices that communicate in ways we can instantly absord - using "analog" signals only, such as voice or sound, light and movement. So instead of needing to watch a screen to read a message it could be read aloud by something. And if that something were even cute and fun and had some other useful functions, the better!

Let me introduce you to a - rabbit!

An electronic rabbit of course, called Nabaztag. It looks cute and can do do a lot while needing no interface: it can tell me the weather, read out news, tell jokes, bring some fresh life in my routine.

Modernfamilies and ambient devices?

This is an ideal combination for people liking gadgets and for people who cannot use a PC but would like to communicate still. A rabbit would be associated with a specific person on modernfamilies' network.

Imagine therefore an 80 year old person in a retirement home. Cannot handle a PC, has a phone, TV and is lonely. His kids live in another country. His son now bought him this little rabbit - which is cute. It reads him the news, reminds him to take his medicine, wakes up with his favourite melody, announces the time, makes some jokes, is a great topic to talk about to his room mates - and it reads him all the news in his family. Direct messages from his son, but also all the other stories. How his niece had an accident, his grand-daughter got a great grade in math, his cousine came back from a vacation in Malta. And the best thing is, when he presses the one large button on the rabbot while he tells a story his phone rings and he can talk to the person the story is about - where-ever in the world. His life changed. And his son feels he can look after his dad a bit although from miles away!
